HIV Testing

There are no HIV Tests available within 10 days after exposure to HIV. However, HIV PEP (Post-exposure prophylaxis) effectively reduces the risk of HIV infection within 72 hours after potential HIV infection.

The HIV RNA test detects HIV virus genetic material and measures how many copies of HIV (viral load) are present in your blood at a particular time. It can track increases and decreases in your HIV viral load and, in conjunction with a CD4 count, be used to evaluate treatment effectiveness.

What is HIV Window Period?

The HIV Window Period is the time from exposure to when an HIV test can pick up accurately. In other words, one of the ways to determine which HIV tests are suitable for you is to time of exposure.  

• HIV PrEP can reduce the risk of HIV infection before any potential HIV exposure.  
• HIV PEP is effective within 72 hours after potential HIV exposure.  
   

What are the Symptoms of HIV?

Acute HIV Infection  

As early as 2 – 4 weeks after the first exposure, acute retroviral syndrome (ARS) will start to develop. After acute retroviral syndrome (ARS), symptoms will disappear. 

The early symptoms of HIV may include:
